The Weldam castle in Markelo,Hof van Twente,is located along the road between Diepenheim and Goor.The castle was first mentioned in 1389.The present castle was built in 1645 and was expanded with towers in 1897 and 1899.The House is surrounded by a moat. The gardens,4.5 ha,are surrounded by a splendid landscapepark.The first gardens were created in the last decades of the 17th century.The lay-out of the present gardens was made by the French architect Edouard Andre and especially by his pupil Hugo Poortman at the end of the 19th century.The result is an Old-Dutch garden with a French character.The gardens are open to visit daily from Monday till Sunday(7 Jan.-20 Dec. 8.30-16.00h.).
